SYDNEY EVENT

What is going on in Australian higher education? Andrew Norton, Grattan Institute’s Higher Education Program Director, discusses the program’s first report with Julie Hare, Higher Education editor at The Australian, at this public Grattan Institute event in Sydney.

The report, Mapping Australian higher education, puts in one place key facts and their context about a sector that every year educates 1.2 million students and attracts $23 billion of expenditure, almost 2% of Australia’s GDP, yet attracts little public attention. The report examines the sector’s strengths and weaknesses and how it is
changing to meet Commonwealth policy imperatives.

About the speakers

Andrew Norton worked for 11 years concurrently at the University of Melbourne, where he was policy adviser to the Vice-Chancellor, and at the Centre for Independent Studies, before joining Grattan Institute in August 2011. He has published many newspaper articles and papers on higher education, public opinion, campaign finance law and other issues. In the late 1990s, he was higher education adviser to the then federal education minister, David Kemp.

Julie Hare is higher education editor at The Australian. She joined The Australian in August 2010, after six years editing the specialist higher education title Campus Review. Before that, Julie was a writer and editor in the school and vocational education sectors. Her early years in journalism were in magazines, as an editor, sub-editor and feature writer.

Grattan Institute

Grattan Institute is based in Melbourne, Australia, and was launched in 2009 with strong support from both the private and public sectors. It aims to focus on the important rather than the urgent. The things that could make a difference to the well-being of Australians over the long run, not distracted by three year electoral cycles. Since launch, Grattan Institute has established a profile as a leader of independent analysis of Australian domestic public policy. It aims to influence both public discussion and senior decision-makers.
